Texas Scramble

The Plassey Texas Scramble was won by a team scoring a nett 55.8 (gross 62 less (10% combined handicap =)6.2) and calling itself the Marmalade Heads. When you see the outfits below you can understand the reason for the name, Neil Rogers (second from the left) said “This is the first time I have ever won a golf tournament and I am thrilled to bits”. As is the trend with superstars these days, he invited his children Grace and Maisy to join the celebration photograph. After the game Neil set off for a 30 mile bike ride. He is in training for the London to Paris cycle race which takes place in mid May. Neil is raising money for McMillan Nurses, and we all know what a super job they do. Well done Neil.

Away Day at Shrigley Hall

The Plassey social group had an Away Day at Shrigley Hall Macclesfield with an overnight stay. There were two Pairs competitions, one on each day with partners being drawn rather than picked. The event was organised by Elwyn Griffiths. Elwyn is in the centre of the group with the blue cap and Roy Orbison glasses. A great time was had by all. Well done, Elwyn. The results were as follows
Day 1; 1) Dave Wickins Simon Harris; 2) Ian Lockhart Tony Meadows; 3) Dave Hatton John Bennett; Longest drive Andy Brown; Nearest pin Roy Corker
Day 2; 1) Simon Harris Andy Brown; 2) Dave Lafferty Mark Deacon; 3) Nigel Lloyd Ian Lockhart; Longest Drive Liam Jones; Nearest pin Dave Wickins

Major Golf – Help the Heroes

Major Golf held a charity day for “Help the Heroes” at Mere Golf Club Cheshire. Two 4 ball teams from the Plassey took part. See group photograph opposite. Alas the Plassey teams did not feature when… the trophies were handed out – you can’t win them all! Andy Brown played in a team with famous ex-world snooker champion Dennis Taylor – remember him with the big glasses? Other celebrities at the event included ex-footballer David Platt (remember the goal against Belgium in the World Cup) and ex- Manchester United star Dwight Yorke. Big thanks go to our President Richard Bloss for putting the event together.

St David’s Day Shield

The Shield was played for on – YES – you’ve guessed it! – Saturday 1st March 2014 – St David’s Day. The daffodils were out in force at the club. The winner of the Shield was Handicap Secretary Richard (“Reg”) Whyatt with 40 pts. Runner up was Joel Harold with 39 points. 3rd was last year’s winner Liam Jones with 38 pts and 4th was Sean Harold with 37 pts. Reg is pictured below receiving the Shield from Club Captain Dave Lafferty.

Peter Vaughan Games Evening

As you may know Peter Vaughan has not been too well lately and has been in Nightingale House Hospice in Wrexham. Peter is a stalwart member of the Plassey Golf Club. He is a Past Captain and… Past President of the Club. One of his biggest claims to fame is that he was Team Captain when the Plassey won Division 3 of the Denbighshire Golfing Union inter -club league in 2004. Peter with the help of fellow member Ian Lockhart has been up to the club on a few occasions to play cards with some of the members. Peter decided to return the compliment and invited club members to Nightingale House for the Peter Vaughan Games Evening. The event was very well attended as can be seen from the photograph. Peter is seen in the front and centre of the photograph. Richard Bloss, the President of the Plassey Golf Club, says that “it is my privilege to select the Plassey club charities for this year. Nightingale House will be one of those selected charities in recognition of the magnificent work they do”. Big thanks go to Nightingale House and their staff for facilitating the evening, and to Ian Lockhart for pulling it all together.

Captains Drive In (March)

The Plassey Captains’ started the 2014 season with the Captains’ Reception at the Plassey Clubhouse on the Friday evening. This was, as usual well attended,  and members enjoyed a meet and greet… social evening with the Club Captains and new President Richard Bloss. The Plassey Captains’ Drive In took place on the Saturday – see photo below. John Brookshaw, the Club Proprietor, was on hand to provide the traditional shotgun start. Reg Whyatt and Frank Unsworth tied for the ‘Guess the Length of the Captains’ Drive’ organised by Vice Captain Dave Onslow. Proceeds go to the President’s charity. The Drive In was followed by the St David’s Day Shield which was won by that man again – Reg Whyatt – with 40 points. Congratulations Reg. Other results: 2nd Joel Harold 39 pts.; 3rd (last year’s winner) Liam Jones 38 pts.;  and 4th Sean Harold 37 pts.
