Didn’t we have a ball the day we went to Astbury Hall At the crack of dawn (well O.K. 7.30 in the morning) 44 golfers set out on a coach from the Plassey to the luxurious Astbury Hall near Bridgenorth. The Hall and course is owned by K K Downing who, as you will all recall, was the lead guitarist with heavy metal band Judas Priest. Bacon baps and coffee were provided on arrival.
One of the biggest cheers of the day was for President Richard Bloss who shot a 2 (TWO) on the final hole, in front of a huge crowd, packing the Bar Patio area at the Hall. Dinner of steak pie and chips with a dish of vegetables, followed by strawberries and cream, was then served in a plush marquee. After this, we had the presentation, at which Captain Dave Lafferty presented all the prizes. The winners on the day were Men, Ben Mitchell; Ladies, Sharon Harold; and Juniors Cameron Meadows. Cameron was also the overall winner.
Dave thanked everyone for coming and paid particular tribute to his wife Lady Captain Emma, who had done so much, to make the day a great success. Then it was back on the coach to the Plassey, in time to have a last drink at the Plassey Clubhouse.
Luke Johnson held his Junior Captain’s Day last Saturday. Once again it was extremely hot with welcomed refreshments on the 10th tee. The main event of the day being the Junior Captain’s Cup was won by Cameron Meadows with a nett 63. Club President Richard Bloss won the mens prize with a nett 61 which is pretty good for an old timer. Jean Thompson took the ladies prize. Nice to see past junior Captain John Joy playing as a guest. John plays at Wallasey Golf Club off a handicap of 1 (ONE) . He scored 67 gross – one over par for the course. At the presentation Luke thanked everyone for playing and highlighted the superb condition of the course. He particularly thanked parents Peter and Mandy Johnson for all their help and sponsorship for the day.
All Plassey Past Captains and the current Captain of the Plassey are entitled to join the Denbighshire Golf Clubs Past Captains Society. The society plays at each club’s course during the year. The Plassey hosted the event on 11 June 2014 which was a lovely sunny day. Players enjoyed an excellent roast dinner on finishing their round. At the presentation Plassey Captain Dave Lafferty welcomed all the players to our club. Les Collins the 2012/13 President of the Society handed out the prizes. The winner of the main prize, being the Kirby Salver, was Eric Howells of Denbigh Golf Club. Eric said he was extremely impressed with the condition of our course particularly the greens.
Pictured opposite is the team which represented the Plassey in the Welsh Handicap Team Championship Regional Finals at Rhuddlan Golf Club. The best 3 scores counted being Peter Johnson 34 pts; Liam Jones 31 pts and Reg Whyatt 27 pts making a total of 92 points.
It was a roasting hot day for the annual Anglesey Masters and Vase. The men play for the Anglesey Masters jacket and the ladies for the Anglesey Vase. Andy Dickinson was the winner of the Anglesey Masters Jacket with 40 pts. Rumour has it, Andy was so pleased with winning, that he slept in the jacket on Saturday night. Jean Thompson won the Anglesey Vase with 37 pts. Cameron Meadows took the junior event with 34 pts. Ted Davies won the Seniors 9 hole with 18 pts and Joe Sephton took the guests’ prize. Big thanks go the Tony and Jen Meadows for sponsoring the event and ordering the sunshine. Refreshments on the 10th tee were particularly welcome given the blistering heat.
The Seniors Eyton Cup was played on Friday evening 6th May 2014 in glorious sunshine. They say the sun only shines on the righteous. Ben Mitchell’s parents very kindly provided the trophies. Paul Wellstead was the winner with 17 points just pipping runner up Peter Cox who had 16 points.
Andy Brown won the men’s competition and the Eyton Cup with 40 pts; Sharon Harold won the ladies with 34 pts and Cameron Meadows the juniors with 34 pts. Chris Jordan was the guest winner.

Thirty members took part in this annual team match play event for the Fellowship trophy. Unfortunately Vice Captain Dave Onslow was not present as he is recovering from an operation on his knee. OUCH ! We all wish him well and hope to see him back in the swing of things shortly. In his absence, President Richard Bloss (on behalf of Dave) handed over the Fellowship team trophy to the winning team, captained by Club Captain Dave Lafferty. Lafferty’s team won by a very narrow margin of 15 and a half to 14 and a half points. It was that close. Mark (“Yogie”) Graham, a new boy to competition golf, crowned a great day by scoring his first ever two in competition golf. Well done Yogie. The President presented Yogie (Mark) with a “solid gold golf ball” to mark the occasion. Excuse the pun! – oh, and by the way, it wasn’t actually a solid gold golf ball but a multi-coloured rubber ball – but don’t tell any one!
