Motorhomes Vs Caravans

As one of the leading touring sites in North Wales, Plassey is pleased to offer pitches for both caravans and motorhomes. Buying a caravan or a motorhome is a big investment, and it can be quite difficult to decide which is best for you. So, we have pulled together a little information to make things a little clearer for you.

Caravans are homes on wheels that are detachable from your car but do require a little bit of driving skill behind the wheel. The fact they are detachable from your car means that this gives you more freedom to go out and about exploring in the local area once you have set the caravan on site. Caravans are also getting more and more sophisticated interior wise meaning they are now more comfortable and packed full of mod cons than ever.

Motorhomes, on the other hand, are similarly equipped to caravans and easier to drive but don’t allow you as much flexibility for travelling around once you are set up on site. There is sometimes a bit of confusion as to what a motorhome is as compared to a camper van – camper vans (such as the classic VW model) are vans which have been adapted to provide accommodation whereas motorhomes are purpose built vehicles.

One of the main considerations which may affect whether you decide to go for a motorhome or caravan is cost. Caravans typically cost around £19,000 to buy new whereas a motorhome can cost upwards of £45,000. However, you need to weigh depreciation against this as although caravans cost less to start with they tend to depreciate more quickly than motor homes. One plus point for caravans though is that you do not need MOT, Insurance or road tax for them as you do for a motorhome.

Your decision may also be based on the type of touring you choose to do. So, for example, if you like to move around a lot – spending one night here, then moving on for a night, then spending two nights somewhere else, a motorhome may be a more practical choice for you. Whereas if you want to stay in the same spot for a fortnight, a caravan may work out to be more suitable.  Your decision may also be affected by whether you want to tow a caravan and are not put off by the thought of reversing and coupling and uncoupling at the end of your journey.

Whatever your decision, the pitches we offer at Plassey are suitable for caravans, motorhomes and tents and are available and we offer both Standard and Deluxe pitches. On a standard pitch, your caravan, motorhome or tent is supplied with a 16amp electricity hook up. Our deluxe pitches are only suitable for caravans or motorhomes and come equipped with 16amp electric, lighting, water and wastewater facilities, as well as full Digital TV and Sky Connectivity.
